2010 Pipestone System Scholarship Winner Announced
June 10, 2010
Meg Viland earned her Pipestone System FFA Scholarship with an impressive array of activities at school and in her community. She says she’ll notice the absence of that busy schedule over the summer.

Dr. Larry Goelz presents Meg Viland her Pipestone System Scholarship. Meg will attend SDSU next fall.

On the day after her final high school track meet Meg was trying to picture her life without track and summer band camp. “I’m going to have more time now,” she says. Not that she won’t find plenty to do on her family’s Century Dairy Farm near Pipestone, MN.
“My parents have always been my main employers since I needed a flexibly work schedule to fit around my activities,” Meg explains. So between journeys to National 4-H Consumer Judging Contest in Denver and state dairy judging competition she’d milk the cows. “This summer I’ll probably spend most of my time training calves,” she adds.
At South Dakota State University (SDSU) Meg intends to continue her emphasis on animal agriculture. She’ll take biology courses to start and see where that leads. “I like trying new things!” Meg says.

- Applicants must be FFA members.
- Agriculture or ag business majors are preferred.
- Winner must maintain a 2.8 GPA during the college freshman year.
- Winner will develop a presentation to prospective FFA students and deliver it at the close of the first year of college.
Meg’s accomplishments
During her high school career Meg Viland studied her way into the National Honor Society while lettering in cross country, track, marching band, concert band, and pep band. She was also a four-year FFA member and a four-year 4-H officer who competed in dairy judging, consumer judging, and 4-H quiz bowl.
In addition Meg found time for church youth group, nursing home visits, Salvation Army bell ringing, and Adopt-A-Highway ditch walking. And remember she did all that while working on the family dairy farm!
